Apple is pulling AI-generated news summaries after the feature repeatedly produced inaccurate headlines

Apple has decided to pull a feature that uses artificial intelligence to produce summaries of news stories after it repeatedly sent out error-filled headlines, drawing the ire of news organizations like the BBC and the Washington Post.

This feature, which was introduced in the fall, generated headlines that were sometimes misleading or downright false. apple Announce on Thursday that it would pause the program while the company works on improvements.

CBC News has reached out to an Apple spokesperson for more information.

One of the most horrific headlines claimed that Luigi Mangione, the man accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, shot himself. This was wrongly attributed to the BBC, which said so in December You have called Apple with its concerns.

Other false headlines reported that US Defense Secretary nominee Pete Hegseth had been “fired,” that Secretary of State nominee Marco Rubio had been “confirmed,” and that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had been “arrested.” None of it was true.

Reporters Without Borders, a non-profit organization that advocates for freedom of information, sent a statement last month urging Apple to withdraw the feature, saying it was “deeply concerned about the risks that new artificial intelligence tools pose to the media.”

Referring to the Mangione incident, the organization said, “This incident highlights the inability of artificial intelligence systems to systematically disseminate high-quality information, even when based on journalistic sources.”
