Apple is pausing AI notification summaries for news and entertainment apps after facing backlash for creating inaccurate news alerts. Additionally, the company is making changes to notification summaries as a whole to allow for more transparency.
With the latest round of developer previews for iOS 18.3, iPadOS 18.3, and macOS Sequoia 15.3, Apple is completely disabling notification summaries for all news and entertainment apps and will re-enable them in a future update after it’s been revised.
The change comes a few weeks after the BBC He complained to Apple after one of her articles was distorted to suggest that Luigi Mangione, the man accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, shot himself.
In addition to pulling down notification summaries for specific apps, all notification summaries will now be displayed in italics to make it easier for users to distinguish them from regular notifications. Additionally, users will be able to disable notification summaries for a specific app directly from their lock screen.
Apple will also start notifying users that the Notification Summaries feature is beta when they enable the feature. This notification, located in the Settings app, will inform users that the feature may contain errors.
These changes did not come as a surprise, as Apple did last week Release update To further clarify, the text displayed in the notification summary is generated by Apple Intelligence. Some suspect that this will be in the form of a new sign or badge but that is not the case so far.
While the public beta is expected to be released next week, it is not known when iOS 18.3 will be available to the general public.
