Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim will get the full three years of his contract to prove himself, co-owner Jim Ratcliffe said.

Amorim has won just 10 of the 34 Premier League matches he has played since his arrival last year, and is under pressure due to his refusal to change the system.

United finished 15th in the Premier League last season and are in 10th place this season after seven matches.

But Ratcliffe says the club needs to be patient and support the Portuguese coach.

“I remember calling for Alex Ferguson to be sacked in his first two years,” Ratcliffe told The Times. “You look at (Mikel) Arteta at Arsenal. He had a miserable time in the first two years.

“We are focused on results at the end of the day, but we have to be patient and we have to see the results. I think there are a lot of good things at Manchester United. We have to be patient and have a long-term plan. It’s not a light switch.”

“Robben needs to prove that he is a great coach over three years.”

Ratcliffe also said he wants to revive the club’s academy which has previously produced players such as David Beckham, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Gary Neville.

“The academy has really declined at Manchester United,” Ratcliffe said. “You cannot solve the academy’s problem overnight. It takes time. We have just appointed a new director of the academy.”
