Matchroom CEO Frank Smith says heavyweight Dave Allen can take his career to another level to fight someone… “Top 10” The fighters achieved victory over Arslanbek Mahmudov on Saturday evening, October 11.
Top 10 dreams or illusions?
Smith didn’t name any top fighters Allen (24-7-2, 19 KOs) could fight, but the options are limited. The best money fighters can be counted on one hand, and those are the people who likely won’t be interested in Allen. It would be a bad look for them to take that much of a step down in talent.
“Dave Allen, with his win on Saturday, can take the sport to a whole other level,” Matchroom CEO Frank Smith said. DAZN boxing On what’s at stake for Dave Allen if he wins over Arslanbek Mahmudov on Saturday.
Why the big names won’t bite
If Allen wins on Saturday, it could open the door to a fight against a contender. But it is unlikely that he will get any of the real top fighters, such as Moses Itauma, Joseph Parker, or Anthony Joshua, to fight him. These guys won’t look Allen’s way because he’ll still be seen at the local level.
The fighters Allen is likely to face will take him back to where he came from. I’m talking about these guys:
- Lawrence surroundings
- Chili Chang
- Flyer
- Guido Vianello
- Richard Torrez Jr
Usyk, Joshua & Company: Out of his league
It is unlikely that Allen will defeat either of these fighters, and the outcome could be bad for him. He wants Deontay Wilder, but the former WBC champion is looking for a bigger game. In an interview this week, Wilder hinted at a huge fight, and he wasn’t talking about Allen. That would be a lateral move for Deontay from his most recent opponent, Terrell Herndon.
“He puts himself in a position to fight any of these fighters in the top 10,” Smith said. “But necessarily just as a contender, because when you have the commercial value that Dave has, he becomes a bigger ticket seller than some of these fighters in the top 10.”
Wood’s take: Keep it local, not fake
What Frank is saying sounds great, but it’s not realistic for Matchroom to bring in one of the top heavyweights to fight Dave Allen. No matter how good The White Rhino is against Mahmudov, big money men like Joshua, Oleksandr Usyk, Parker and Itauma will be out of reach. It would be a terrible idea for Allin to fight any of these guys, and it would be bad for the fans.
Watching Allen get eliminated by one of these four heavyweights is not going to be fun, especially if one has to pay to watch the spectacle on pay-per-view. It wouldn’t be worth the investment. The best option for Allen in terms of opponent would be to face Derek Chisora next if things go well against Makhmudov. Chisora is 41 and ready to retire. He would be perfect for Allen. War knights could attack her in front of a large crowd in London.
“He can put himself in a position to have any of those fights, or any of those big names, and he will win those fights,” Smith said. “But he has to pass a tough test.”
