Dairy is throwing voting cards in the general elections, as Prime Minister Edda Rama seeks an unprecedented fourth state after a campaign dominated by promises from the European Union membership and corruption allegations.

The polling stations were opened at 7 am local time (05:00 GMT) on Sunday and will be closed at 7 pm (17:00 GMT), with the expectation of results on Monday.

Almost 3.7 million Albanians, among them hundreds of thousands who live abroad, are qualified to vote. For the first time, the diaspora members can throw their cards via mail.

Rama, the leader of the ruling Socialist Party since 2013, has placed himself as an engineer for the future of the European Union in Albania. He pledged that the country would join the bloc by 2030, with the repetition of the promise in its last gathering: “We will get our fourth mandate, and we will not lose one day in Albania 2030 in the European Union.”

Rama Al -Raisi competitor, Sally Perisha, 80, former president and prime minister, is leading the conservative Democratic Party.

Although it was banned from the entry of the United States and the United Kingdom due to the alleged corruption, which he denies, Perisha kept follow -up slogans and adopted them, including “making Albania great again.”

Rama has faced allegations of arresting the state, with the opposition’s voices warning that the political stadium is far from it.

Critics say that Rama’s dominance of public institutions has undermined democratic checks.

The Rama administration did not escape the audit, through his close ally – the mayor of Tirana Erie Flaij – was arrested this year because of the alleged corruption and money laundering. Both men deny the allegations.

“I want to leave the country”

The political competition, in many ways, is a match of old competitors. Rama and Perisha have controlled public life since the fall of communism in 1990. Many younger voters have become disappointed with both.

“I will vote for the benefit of new politicians because those like Rama and Birisha have been here three decades ago and only replace themselves,” said 21 -year -old Arber Qazimi.

Others, like Erisa, a economist, plan to completely refrain from. She said, “I am only thinking about how to get out of the country to study and then stay there and never return,” he said, echoing the feeling of many among a million Albanians who migrated in the past decade.

With the possibility of socialists needing the allies to keep their narrow majority, the smaller parties can be decisive in forming the next government.

The campaign’s path has largely turned into social media platforms, although the Tiktok ban for a year – is supposed to bullying and incitement on the Internet – led to censorship charges.
