National Security Adviser Ajit Duval arrived in Moscow for his focus on strengthening defense and energy relations in India with Russia. The visit comes at a time when the United States raises concerns about the ongoing oil trade in India with Russia. US President Donald Trump recently criticized India with additional tariffs to continue to buy Russian oil while maintaining neutral against the conflict in Ukraine.
According to the TASS report, the visit is part of a planned schedule and will focus on defense cooperation between India and Russia. The source said: “The current escalation of the geopolitical situation will also be discussed. Regardless of the topics will include urgent matters such as Russian oil supplies (to India),” the source said.
In Moscow, Doufal is expected to hold talks on the cooperation of the defense industry. Discussions may include a potential purchase of more S-400 missile systems, maintenance of maintenance infrastructure in India and explore options for Jets Su-57 Russia.
The visit is seen as part of India’s efforts to pursue an independent foreign policy and preserve its partnerships based on national interests.
Moreover, the Minister of Foreign Affairs S Jaishankar will also visit Russia on August 27 and 28. Its visit will focus on defensive discussions, energy and trade. Jaishankar will meet Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to discuss bilateral and international issues. Russian Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Borisov will also meet to participate in the India and Government Committee on technical and economic cooperation.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that India’s relations with Russia are based on mutual understanding and should not be ruled by other countries.
Meanwhile, on Monday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement rejecting criticism from the United States and the European Union on India’s imports of Russian oil, describing it unjustified. The ministry noted that Western countries previously supported this trade to help stabilize global energy markets and continue to engage in trade with Russia itself.
