Officials said a passenger plane brought nearly 50 people disappeared from the radar on Thursday as it approached the Russian -East Tinda city, prompting widespread research efforts.
The plane, An-24, which is run by Siberian-based Airlines lines, was on its way to Tynda in the Amur region, near Russia’s borders with China, when it suddenly lost radio communication with air traffic monitors.
According to the regional ruler Vasily Orlov, “all the powers and means necessary to search for the plane have been deployed.” In a post on Telegram, Orlov said that preliminary information indicates that 43 passengers, including five children, and six members of the crew were on board.
The Ministry of Local Emergencies provided a small number, as it was estimated at about 40 people on board.
The authorities have not yet confirmed whether the plane had issued any distress signal before its disappearance. As of now, there is no word about the fate of passengers or crew.
A-24 is a dual turbine plane in the Soviet era that is still used in parts of Russia for regional trips, especially in difficult and realistic circumstances.
