A new law in Nebraska wants to make social media less addicted to children

Nebraska is the latest state that gives up how children use social media. The governor of the state, Jim Belllen, recently signed a bundle of billing law aimed at restricting some social media features that keep children addicted to the platform. The final bill signed, called Convenient online design code lawIt will require companies to provide time limits to use, restrict certain categories of content and provide time summaries instead of those algorithm that enhances infinite scroll.

The appropriate online design code law, also known as LB504, is that social media companies can only collect the minimum personal data from younger users, and provides parents more tools to restrict how to use their children. Besides these restrictions, the law prohibits any advertisements related to gambling, alcohol, tobacco or drugs from access to children on social media.

Besides LB504, the signed package of LB140 bills that limit the student’s use of smartphones in schools includes LB383 that requires social media companies to verify the age of their users and require parents’ approval to create accounts, and LB172 that creates criminal penalties for pornographic breakdown of artificial intelligence.

“All of these bills have an incredible impact on helping our teachers and giving our schools the opportunity to teach our children, instead of disruption in the class,” Bellen said in a press statement. “They also provide parents to the tools they need to protect our children from Big Tech companies via the Internet and predators.”

The law is scheduled to enter into force on January 1, 2026, and any companies that violate these new regulations will face civil sanctions.
