Manchester United are expected to sign a new goalkeeper in 2026, and Tottenham are also seeking reinforcements between the woods. As expected, this led to both clubs setting similar targets, and One of them is Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen.
Until this season, Ter Stegen had been Barcelona’s number one player for the better part of a decade, but he now ranks third in the pecking order in Hansi Flick’s squad. For this reason, he was strongly linked to a move away, especially since he needs to play football to be a starter for Germany in the World Cup next summer.
However, it now appears that a mid-season move to Manchester United or Tottenham may be out of the question, which would be frustrating for both clubs.
Marc-Andre ter Stegen is unlikely to leave Barcelona in January

According to Pete O’Rourke (trans Football from the inside), neither Tottenham nor Manchester United are likely to sign Ter Stegen in January, despite the fact that he is out of favor at Barcelona.
“We know Ter Stegen is a top player, he has played at a high level for club and country. Obviously there was some turmoil between him and Barcelona over the summer when they needed to put him on the long-term medical list to make room in their wages for signing new signings like Joan Garcia and Marcus Rashford.”
“Garcia is obviously the number one long-term player now at Barcelona, so I think Ter Stegen’s chances will be limited with the Catalan giants. But I think it’s a deal that is unlikely to happen in the January window.
“It will be interesting to see what happens in the summer if Ter Stegen continues to find himself out of favor at Barcelona. I’m sure Barcelona would rather sell him than potentially loan him out, just to help their financial situation and obviously have his salary removed from the club’s wage list.”
It remains to be seen whether Manchester United or Tottenham will approach Barcelona for Ter Stegen when the transfer window reopens, but for now, both clubs will continue to evaluate their options.
