The Governor of Kano announces the day of mourning after the killing of athletes who represent the state at a national athletic event.
The collapse of the bus in the northern state of Kano in Nigeria killed 22 athletes who returned to their homes from a national athletic event, according to the local ruler.
The governor of Kano Abu Kabir Youssef told Associated Press that the bus, which was carrying more than 30 passengers, fell on the Chiomawa Bridge on the Kano-Zaria Expressway on Saturday.
The exact cause of the accident was not known, but the FRSC Corporation (FRSC) said that “may have occurred as a result of excessive and excessive speed” after a long journey all night.
The survivors of the accident were transferred to a local hospital for treatment.
Youssef said that the athletes, who were accompanied by their coaches and sports officials, represent the state of Kano at the Nigerian National Sports Festival, who held about 1,000 km (620 miles) to the south in the state of Ojun.
Monday announced the day of mourning for the state. His deputy, Amino Ghawarzo, said that the families of the victims will receive one million lights (about 630 dollars) and food supplies as support.
The daily Nigerian Guardian, which issued the National Distribution of Nigerian Students, said a statement, saying that the “sudden” incident may “cast a shadow of sadness over the entire nation, especially youth and sports societies.”
Road accidents are common in the most populated country in Africa, partly due to weak road conditions and traffic laws.
In March, at least six people died near the capital, Abuja, after a trailer collided with parked vehicles and exploded in fire.
Last year, Nigeria recorded 9,570 road accidents that resulted in 5421 deaths, according to FRSC data.
The Nigerian National Sports Sports Festival brings together 35 states in the country every two years.
Nigeria President Paula Tenobo recently said that games, which include sports basketball on wheelchairs to traditional West Africa wrestling, represents “unity, strength and flexibility that determines us as a nation.”
