Spoilers To be followed by “X-Men”.
2024 was the first year for the relaunched “X-Men” comics line, “From The Ashes,” which details The mutants revert to minority status after the loss of their nation, Krakoa.
The core series for “From The Ashes” are “X-Men” (written by writer Jed McKay and artist Ryan Stegman) and “Uncanny X-Men” (written primarily by Gail Simone and drawn by David Marquez). In their latest installment, the two series converge in the first “From The Ashes” crossover titled “Raid on Graymalkin.”
“X-Men” follows Cyclops and Magneto’s leadership of a mutant colony in Alaska, while “Uncanny X-Men” is set in Louisiana. The “Uncanny” team (Rogue, Gamibit, Wolverine, Nightcrawler, and Jubilee) mentor young mutant runaways called “The Outliers.” It’s not just the “super outliers” who are going back to schoolBecause Graymalkin is a mutant prison made from the former Xavier’s School for Gifted Youth.
Members of both teams (Beast for “X-Men”, Jubilee and an Outlier named Calico for “Uncanny”) are captured and imprisoned, so both teams attack the prison. “Raid” began in “X-Men” #8and continued in “Uncanny X-Men” #7 when the two teams clashed in the middle of their simultaneous strikes
Part 3 (of 4) is the upcoming “X-Men” movie #9, which Marvel shared an exclusive preview of with /Film. The summary of the case was as follows:
“Rogue and Cyclops collide when emotions reach a peak, pitting the two groups of X-Men against each other in a place where their only chance to survive is to stand together.
Watch the cover of “X-Men” #9 (drawn by Stegman, featuring Psylocke drawing blades and about to duel Wolverine) below:

When “Uncanny X-Men” #7 stopped, the two teams had to pause their brawl because Graymalkin sent their first team out. Specifically, some of the recruited mutant prisoners – Blob, Wild Child, and Siryn, Banshee’s daughter – and several dog-shaped guards called “Bloodhounds”. The summary page for “X-Men” #9 grabs the reader’s attention:
The next page places us on the battlefield, with five close-up panels tilted in a ribbon, all showing different parts of the action to convey a frenetic scene. The top panel shows the giant on the left side of the frame, attacking the enemy with red optic beams. The painting shows Rogue, posed on right side of the tire, and punched one of the hounds. Cyclops and Rogue are fighting the same battle, but they’re still on opposite sides.
On the next page, Jubilee and Gambit trade some barbs with Temper (who was losing hers in the previous issue while fighting Wolverine). Juggernaut fights Blob, while Wolverine (in a red-washed panel) stabs Wild Child.
The next page returns to Cyclops and Rogue’s fight with the Bloodhounds, while Outlier Deathdream – marveling at how Magik took down Siryn two pages ago – says he likes her style. Naturally, the Goths get along.
The preview ends here, but the battle — and the “Raid on Graymalkin” — certainly doesn’t.
“X-Men” #9 is scheduled for release on December 25, 2024.
