The Vatican said on Friday that Pope Francis was to be transferred to the hospital to treat bronchitis and undergo some necessary diagnostic tests. A spokesman said that it is expected to be for a “few days.”
Francis was diagnosed with bronchitis last Thursday, but he continued to hold daily fans in his wing at the Vatican Hotel, and his fans attended on Wednesday until he headed in an outdoor mass on Sunday. However, he handed his speech to his help to read loudly, saying that he is facing a breathing problem.
Francis, who was part of one lung removed when he was a young man, has long been suffering from health problems, especially long bouts of acute bronchitis in the winter. He uses a wheelchair, walking or cane when moving around his apartment and fell twice, which harmed his arm and chin.
Since his diagnosis, Francis appeared swollen, which indicates that the drug he was eating to treat lung infection makes him keep water.
Francis is being taken to the hospital at Gemili Hospital in Rome, where it was last in the hospital in June 2023 to perform surgery to remove the intestinal scar tissue and repair hernia in the abdominal wall. A few months ago, he spent three days in the hospital to receive intravenous antibiotics for respiratory inflammation.
The Vatican statement said that Francis will be accepted at the end of his fans on Friday. In addition to the ordinary Vatican officials, the Pope met on Friday morning with the Slovak Prime Minister, Robert Fico, and the President of CNN, Mark Thompson.
“This morning, at the end of the masses, Pope Francis will be accepted at Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic for some of the necessary diagnostic tests and continuing to treat the hospital to treat bronchitis that is still ongoing,” the statement said.
The Vatican did not provide details about the duration of Francis in the hospital or what will come from his scheduled events. It has a crowded weekend with another special event for the holy year, and this time honoring artists. In the calendar, there is an audience with artists on Saturday, the Mass on Sunday and a trip to the famous Cinecitta Studios in Rome on Monday.
The Vatican Declaration, which was delivered before the hospital, Francis, came in a sharp contradiction with the hospital for 2023 from the bronchitis that caused confusion.
Initially, the Vatican said that he entered the scheduled tests, but the ink later revealed that he felt pain in his chest and was taken to the hospital where bronchitis was diagnosed. He was placed on antibiotics intravenously and was released on April 1, and he hears as he left “still alive.”
Francis spent 10 days in the same hospital in July 2021 after bowel surgery to narrow the intestine.
