The Marvel character you probably forgot is played by Chet Hanks

There are many things wrong Josh Trank’s 2015 superhero film “Fantastic Four.” Often, the film never finds its way to a solid tone and oscillates from fun and funny to bleak or scary, often without a clear rhyme or reason to do so. There’s an element of wonder when Red Richard (Miles Teller) finds a way to travel to alternate dimensions, but the film is also strangely cynical and pessimistic, complete with sharp performances from its four leads (which, along with Teller, include Kate Mara, Michael B. Jordan, and Jamie Bell ). The film spends some time acting like a Cronenberg horror film in which the Fantastic Four discover that their superpowers have been mutated into their bodies.

Then there is a brief period of superhero deconstruction, as the four realize that their powers are being used as military tools of death and destruction. Then, very quickly, the film becomes cartoonish and silly as Dr. Doom (Toby Kebbell) plans some sort of dimension-hopping global invasion. 20th Century Fox was apparently influenced by Trank too much, and the Fantastic Four movie was ultimately torn apart by studio notes. While I have no problems with the Fantastic Four being re-imagined as young geniuses or Doctor Doom no longer being a Latverian dictator, I do have many problems with the fact that the Fantastic Four are so poorly made.

Critics agree. The film received only a 9% approval rating On rotten tomatoes (Based on 259 reviews). It wasn’t a huge success at the box office either, grossing $167.9 million on a $120 million budget.

Also, did you recognize Chet Hanks in the mix? Maybe not. Chet Hanks, the most problematic son of Hollywood star and classic sci-fi fan Tom Hankshas a brief role in the film Trank as Jimmy Grimm, the older brother of Bill’s character. Jimmy, in this version of the “Fantastic Four” story, is a mean bully.

Before we go any further, Chet Hanks is rather famous for some of his criminal activities. In 2015, he trashed a hotel in England while under the influence of cocaine and entered rehab as a result. Then, in 2021, he went through a very public and potentially criminal breakup when his ex-girlfriend, Kianna Parker, sued him for repeated bouts of domestic violence. He also sued Parker for robbery, assault and battery. That same year, Chet Hanks also spoke out against coronavirus vaccines, drawing disdain.

The younger Hanks has worked as an actor and even appeared in the movie “Greyhound” with his father Tom, but many may know him best for his rap career. He was behind “White Boy Summer” and “DAMN!” In 2021.

In Fantastic Four, one can catch Hanks in the early scenes of the film. Future hero The Thing, Ben Grimm, is only 12 years old (played by Evan Hanneman) and lives in a junkyard with his poor, abusive family. His older brother Jimmy is seen playing baseball with his friends when little Ben comes home from school. Jimmy asks Ben to do a chore, and Ben refuses. An angry Jimmy chases him inside and angrily hits his younger brother several times. Fortunately, the boys’ mother quickly appeared and ended the violence. It’s not a big scene for Hanks, but it effectively conveys that life sucks for young Ben. One can understand why Ben would want to spend time with aspiring engineer Reed Richards instead.

Of course, since interconnectivity is one of the primary selling points of modern Marvel films, one can now accept that Chet Hanks is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, or at least has the potential to be. His version of Jimmy Grimm is perhaps one of many characters that appear in it The upcoming “Avengers: Secret Wars” movie …But it’s best not to rely on that.
