The conference fined Marshall for withdrawing from a college football game

Sunbelt was fined Marshall Thunder Herd $100,000 to opt out of the Independence Bowl in December.

Louisiana Tech replaced Marshall in their game against Army, losing 27-6 to Army.

“While the conference recognizes the medical model and best practice guidelines to which Marshall is committed, as well as their primary concern for the health and safety of remaining student-athletes eligible to compete in a safe and viable manner, the nature and timing of this decision was detrimental to the Sun Belt Conference and its membership of Army and Radiance,” the Sun Belt said in a statement. Despite the fine, Marshall athletics director Christian Spears said he stands by his decision to withdraw from the game.

“In good conscience, we could not send 41 student-athletes onto this field. Again, we will always prioritize the health and safety of our student-athletes,” Spears said. “But this does not negate the fact that a sincere and formal apology must be made.”

Marshall went 10-3 in the regular season, including winning its final seven games to win the Sun Belt championship.

Instead of continuing to play Army in a bowl game, head coach Charles Huff left Marshall because it was far from a contract extension with the school.

Huff then left Marshall to take the head coaching job at Southern Miss. More than 25 players jumped into the transfer portal due to his departure, causing Marshall to withdraw from the game.
