Amid a raging debate over 90-hour workweek, Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal has unveiled a ‘wellness plan’ for its employees.
In a post on Not to mention menstrual leave, as well as gender-neutral parental leave policies.
“We recently partnered with The Wellness Co (@thewellnessco_), to set up a wellness facility at our headquarters in Gurgaon,” Goyal added.
The Zomato CEO highlighted that the facility provides access to cutting-edge treatments such as cryotherapy, red light therapy and hyperbaric oxygen therapy to its employees and their families.
He also noted that more than 200 people use this center regularly now and that repeat rates are very high. “We have more great HR/people initiatives coming up. We will be posting some of them here soon,” Goyal added.
Goyal’s post gains prominence amid the rampaging narrative of the 90-hour work week pushed by L&T Chairman SN Subramanian. Many Indian corporate leaders disagreed with this concept and called for more quality of work over time spent in the workplace.
Some social media users also wondered if they would get 90 hours’ pay if they gave 90 hours. Many of them also asked questions about promotions and fairness.
The controversy began when Subramanian defended mandatory Saturday working days, quipping: “What are you doing sitting at home? How long can you stare at your wife? He made comparisons with China’s alleged 90-hour work ethic, claiming it was the key to economic dominance.
Nirmalya Kajori, a professor at IIT Mandi, added another layer to this debate, noting that many countries compensate professionals for overtime while Indian companies routinely ask for 50 to 60 unpaid hours.
