The Federal Trade Commission is sending checks to fully reimburse everyone who purchased Razer Zephyr air-purifying masks, which were mislabeled during the COVID-19 pandemic as having protection equivalent to an N95. Refunds total $1.1 million and are automatically sent to all 6,764 customers who purchased one of the masks.
The FTC has filed a lawsuit against Razer, a gaming and lifestyle company, after the company It sold the Zephyr mask as an N95-equivalent mask. Since it is a government-regulated standard, a company cannot release a mask and label it N95. It must be authenticated first.
While Razer submitted the mask for certification, the Zephyr never received such a rating. Eventually, Razer took the Zephyr off the market but continued to sell filter replacements. The company eventually suspended that as well and started issuing refunds.
The FTC lawsuit alleged that Razer only refunded 6% of consumers who purchased the mask or filter replacements. The $1.1 million settlement seeks to compensate the other 94% of customers who did not receive their money back.
