Resignation of Tulip Siddiq, British Anti-Corruption Minister

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer was dealt a new blow on Tuesday when Anti-Corruption Minister Tulip Siddique resigned from her post weeks after she was named in an embezzlement investigation in Bangladesh.

Ms Siddiq, a junior minister in Mr Starmer’s government, had previously referred herself to the Prime Minister’s ethics adviser for investigation. She rejected the accusations against her, describing them as politically motivated, and insisted that she had done nothing wrong.

As Economic Secretary to the Treasury – a position she held when Labor came to power last July – Ms Siddiq was responsible for tackling corruption in financial markets, including money laundering and illicit finance.

In her formal resignation letter to Mr Starmer, Ms Siddiq wrote: “I want to assure you that I have acted, and continue to act, with full transparency and on the advice of those responsible regarding these matters.”

He added: “But it is clear that my continued role as Economic Secretary to the Treasury is likely to be a distraction from the work of the government.”
