This smart home pod promises powerful new tricks to stop porch hackers

Hyve’s original take on a centuries-old solution

I noticed several interesting additions to this new cabinet, including:

1. Carbon fiber rope to keep the box secure. Delivery lock boxes aren’t exactly easy to move, but if you’re worried about thieves stealing the entire box, you can use this quarter-inch cable to tie it to a post or railing for safekeeping.
2. An accelerometer to sound an alarm if the box is tampered with. Tamper Alert will also send you a phone alert so you know when an unauthorized person tries to get in.
3. An app to “disable” your trunk or send special unlock codes to delivery services, family, friends, and others. When using the code, the owner can get the alert update. The app can also connect to some existing smart home security systems, but details aren’t clear on that at the moment.
4. A small window at the top of the capsule so the delivery person can take a photo to confirm delivery, meeting the owner and delivery company’s requirements (this feature is particularly logical, I haven’t seen another box with it).
5. Compatibility with return packet capture software.

These additions make Hyve unique among many delivery boxes, but Hyve Security also wants to achieve something more ambitious. The capsule is designed to encourage retailers to spend less money on outer packaging. For example, if everyone had a delivery box, companies could theoretically cut back on packaging materials designed to protect against the elements or theft, helping the environment and lowering the carbon footprint of packaging.

That’s a lofty goal, but it shows where Hyve Security is coming from. The company was founded by Melissa Keeling (founder of freezable food bag company Packit) and her son to solve this specific household problem. You won’t have to wait long if you want to pick one up: Buyers will be able to purchase the Hyve delivery pod starting in June 2025 for $300.
