Los Angeles County declares a state of emergency due to Trump administration ICE raids

Los Angeles County leaders declared a local state of emergency in the area on Tuesday, according to local officials.

News of the announcement was shared in an online press release by the Los Angeles County Supervisor Lindsey Horvathoffice.

This action was said to be a response to Immigration and customs (ICE) conducted raids across Los Angeles County, which is home to more than 10 million people and one of the largest immigrant populations in the United States.

The county can now provide financial support to residents affected by the raids, including rent relief and access to state funds for any legal assistance.

“What is happening in our communities is an emergency and Los Angeles County is treating it as an emergency,” Horvath said in the statement.

“Declaring a local emergency ensures that the full weight of county government is aligned to support our immigrant communities targeted by federal action,” she added.

The notice of declaration, dated Oct. 9, said it would remain in effect until terminated by the Board of Supervisors.

The county administrations were ordered to “take necessary emergency measures to protect and stabilize communities impacted by federal immigration actions,” the statement said.

County supervisors voted 4-1 in favor of an emergency declaration to mobilize county resources and support affected communities despite potential legal challenges from the federal government.

Provincial officials claimed the raids “created a climate of fear, resulting in widespread disruption to daily life and negative impacts on our regional economy,” including decreased attendance at workplaces, closures of temporary or permanent businesses, and increased pressure on schools, hospitals and places of worship.

Supervisor Janice Hahn said the emergency declaration was necessary to respond to “the fear, pain and chaos that ICE raids are causing our community.”

“We have entire families who are destitute because their fathers or mothers were taken away from their workplaces,” she said. “I want our migrant communities to know that we are in this emergency with them,” she added.

Superintendent Holly Mitchell also added that the raids have encouraged others to commit acts of violence and hate based on race.

The only vote against the declaration came from board President Catherine Barger, who warned that the district’s action could lead to legal consequences.

“The federal government has the sole authority to enforce federal immigration law, and local governments cannot obstruct that authority,” Barger said. “We must instead advocate for meaningful meaning Immigration reform “This is fair, practical and creates legal pathways for those who contribute to our communities.”

In a statement to Fox News Digital, ICE said, “The only emergency is the one faced by the people of Los Angeles after electing officials who give the middle finger to the law.”

Spokeswoman Emily Convington added: “Maybe the board should ‘oversight’ the funds allocated to support law-abiding fire victims who have not yet recovered, rather than criminal illegal aliens seeking refuge in their safe-haven city. While they are openly fear-mongering, I would be shocked if they don’t agree with ICE to remove a child rapist from their neighborhood.”
