It feels like an absolute age since then Thomas Tuchel It was first announced as England boss.
Truth be told, it is an era. On October 16, 2024, a year ago now, it was unveiled to the press.
This was something completely different for the Germans. He has never coached at international level, and since starting the job, he has officiated just eight matches. It’s really a struggle to gather any momentum or really figure out what the Three Lions are even capable of World Cup Launching next summer.
Things started out pretty slow in all honesty. England, led by Tuchel, suffered a 2-0 victory over Albania in his first match before defeating Latvia 3-0.
His second international holiday at the beginning of the summer was even worse. They won against Andorra 1-0, then lost 3-1 to Senegal.
Fortunately, things have improved since then, as she scored five goals against Serbia last September and thrashed Wales 3-0 in the space of 20 minutes in the October break.
Regardless of those results, England were always one of the favorites in America next summer. But the age-old question is, who will be on board?
We asked the AI to piece together what Tuchel’s 26-man squad would look like, and here is the result…
1
Goalkeepers
No prizes for guessing who the AI thinks will be Tuchel’s No. 1 in training next summer. That honor goes to Jordan Pickford who has cemented himself as one of his country’s best goalkeepers in recent years.
The Everton man has featured in every major tournament (4) since the World Cup in 2018, and according to AI, he will be joined by Newcastle duo Aaron Ramsdale and Nick Pope. Ramsdale has not featured in any of Tuchel’s squad so far, so he will need to find a way to play some football before the tournament kicks off next summer.
At the moment, he is behind Pope in the pecking order but there is no doubt that he is a good goalkeeper, someone who was seen as a future No.1 when at Arsenal.
Full list of goalkeepers: Pickford, Ramsdell, and Pope.
2
Defenders
Amnesty International expects Tuchel to take four of his centre-backs to the United States next year, with John Stones named alongside Mark Guehi in defence, just as they did during Euro 2024.
Despite having a move to Liverpool rejected over the summer, Guehi has started the season well at Crystal Palace and is already looking like an outstanding England defender.
Amnesty International also believes Milan centre-back Fikayo Tomori could be on board, and is set to earn his first minutes for his country since 2023. Note that there is no place for Dan Byrne who has been a regular in Tuchel’s first few camps in England.
Levi Colwell is currently out with an anterior cruciate ligament issue but is expected to return for the latter stages of the season, which could give him the chance to make the squad.
At full-back, England have options. Trent Alexander-Arnold, Tino Livramento and Reece James have been selected on the right side. James offers solid versatility and can play at centre-back if necessary.
At left-back, there are places on board for Manchester City’s Rico Lewis and Arsenal’s Myles Lewis-Skelly. The England coach recently hinted that Lewis Skelly will need to start playing more to earn his place in America.
Full list of defenders: Goehi, Stones, Tomori, Colwell, Alexander-Arnold, Liveramento, James, Lewis Skelly, Lewis.
3
Midfielders
To the delight of most supporters across the country, Amnesty International believes Jordan Henderson will miss the occasion. The Brentford midfielder has been called into action under Tuchel but despite his experience and leadership, he could actually miss out.
There is also no room for Elliot Anderson, who has impressed since making his England debut during the international break in September. Perhaps he will pay the price for Nottingham Forest’s poor performance.
Key players such as Declan Rice and Eberechi Eze have been included, while there is a place for Jodi Bellingham who was ruled out of the camp in October, due to fitness concerns and a lack of minutes for Real Madrid.
They are joined by some wildcard options in the form of Atletico Madrid’s Conor Gallagher, Liverpool’s Curtis Jones and Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton, who steps ahead of Anderson to fill the sixth spot.
Kobbie Mainoo also makes the cut. Has Ruben Amorim been sacked? The youngster will likely play enough minutes to be in the reckoning. The latest name is arguably the biggest surprise of all with Everton’s James Garner on board. To his credit, he has started the season well under David Moyes, scoring a goal and an assist in his first seven matches.
Full list of midfielders: Rice, Bellingham, Gallagher, Maino, Ease, Wharton, Jones, Garner.
