Walmart is partnering with OpenAI to integrate new shopping features into ChatGPT

Walmart digs deeper Its relationship with OpenAI is a new partnership that will allow customers to purchase products through ChatGPT.

Using Instant Checkout, a new in-chat shopping feature created by OpenAI, consumers will be able to purchase Walmart products directly through ChatGPT, underscoring how AI is redefining the retail industry.

The companies did not specify when this feature would be rolled out, but indicated that it would be available to Walmart customers “soon.”

“For many years now, e-commerce shopping experiences have consisted of a search bar and a long list of item responses. That’s about to change. There’s a coming native AI experience that’s multimedia, personalized, and contextual,” Walmart CEO Doug McMillon said.

Walmart and Sam’s Club are already leveraging AI across their businesses to help employees become more efficient and simplify the shopping process for customers. It has been experimenting with AI technology for more than seven years, including rolling out the voice assistant, “Ask Sam,” which automates tasks for Walmart and Sam’s Clubs Partners.

Artificial intelligence is playing a major role in the industry, with McMillon saying during a workforce conference at the company’s Bentonville headquarters that the technology will “literally change every job.”

McMillon is among many CEOs who have been vocal about technology changing the functionality of some roles, even eliminating positions. At Walmart, McMillon explained that some jobs and tasks will be cut due to… artificial intelligence. At the same time, it will also help in creating new roles.

Walmart teamed up with OpenAI last month to provide front-line and office workers with free AI training to prepare them for the “jobs of tomorrow.”
