Loving fall rides – BionicOldGuy

I have enjoyed many easy hikes. After doing more research, I realized that a long flight is good for my heart as long as the pace is not challenging, because it lowers diastolic blood pressure slightly compared to rest. Diastolic pressure, which is the lower number in a reading such as 120/80, is the most important for leaky aortic valves because that is the number when the valve is closed. I used to do one long trip a week (my group trip) and short trips on other days, but last week I took longer trips. It felt great, I didn’t have any of the symptoms my heart would have if it was straining due to an excessive valve leak.

A few days ago, we took a “Taco Tuesday” trip, including a fun drive on Coyote Creek Road. On Sunday, I did a quick ride through Coyote Valley on Santa Teresa Avenue, including some short intervals and some strength training on the bike. I also did my upper body strength work before the ride. All of this can be tolerated well if it is short enough. I also have to do several repetitions of strength training instead of some of the exercises I was doing isometrically, because isometrics can cause high blood pressure. In general, I still keep things within the amount approved by my cardiologist. It feels good to be able to overcome limitations and still get a good workout.

He took a break in Metcalfe Park last Tuesday, when some pigs came to visit. They are cute but cause a lot of damage to lawns.
Beautiful view of the hills west of Morgan Hill from St. Martin on Thursday
Entering Coyote Valley last Sunday. Our Open Space Authority has done a good job of preserving the land here.
