Deep space has always held a special place in my life Horror lover heart. Science fiction Horror may not be as popular as ghost stories or ghost stories, but there is something about it that always makes me want to listen to it. The endless void of space pressing from all sides, geometric monsters causing chaos, and giant spaceships hurtling through space and time are all standards of the genre. Movies like Alien or Event Horizon are some of the best known films in the genre, but they are not the only options.

One of my lesser-known favorites is Pandorum. Released in 2009, it is a claustrophobic journey into space in which a mechanic wakes up on a colony ship to see that things have gone terribly wrong. There is an abandoned spaceship, terrible things hunting through the corridors, and a mystery unraveling in the bowels of the ship. It gives off major Dead Space vibes, an underrated classic.

Pandorum captures the terrifying feeling of a shipwreck, the fear of being surrounded by a structure where there is only space waiting outside, a world that combines physical horror with existential dread. Its cinematic style captured my attention and kept me watching, even when I desperately wanted to look away.

Corporal Power (played by Ben Foster) wakes from cold sleep with a disturbing case of amnesia. Almost immediately, it becomes clear that things have not gone according to plan on the Elysium, the colony ship transporting 60,000 humans from an overpopulated Earth to a new world. The machinery around him had deteriorated, the energy continued to flicker, and he seemed to be alone.

Bauer is soon joined by Lt. Payton (Dennis Quaid), an officer who also wakes up from cryosleep with no answers. After the two were able to activate the auxiliary power, they decided to go to the bridge to find out what was happening. Bauer manages to escape the cold zone, only to find that the rest of the ship is in worse condition.

Bauer and Nadia sit together.

Bauer must unite with other survivors to endure the madness of Elysium.

On a ship diverted from its original humanitarian mission of populating a new planet, he encounters creatures that only vaguely resemble humans, as well as humans fighting to survive. Bauer finds two companions – a member of the farming team who does not speak English but has been hunting predatory creatures, and Nadia, an ecologist.

The three head to the ship’s reactor to reset the power and get everything running so they can determine what happened and why. Along the way, they encounter a mysterious survivor who tells them that things fell apart when the bridge received bad news from Earth and was overtaken by pandorm, a space-induced malaise that can cause psychosis, brought on by strong emotional states.

At the same time, Payton, who remained in the cold room, finds another survivor who appears to be suffering from Pandorm and tells Payton what really happened on the bridge. Payton tries to calm the survivor, but his condition seems to get worse the more they talk. Payton pushes him into the cold sleep pod to keep him from causing chaos, while he continues to talk with Bauer about what he must do to get the reactor back up and running the ship again.

Lieutenant Payton sits in a chair as chaos erupts around him.

Payton is trying to help Bauer, but he may need help himself.

The setting of Pandorum is perfect for anyone who loves hard sci-fi horror. With a massive, collapsing spaceship as the main set, winding, claustrophobic corridors and a world developing within metal walls, this creepy film lasts just under two hours. The possibility of the Pandorum distorting everyone’s perspective, the monsters in the walls and the tragedy that started it all work together to deliver an action-packed, dread-filled adventure.

The third act of Pandorum is when everything escalates and secrets are revealed – the truth about the bridge, where the ship has been piloted and what comes next for the survivors on board – but you have to watch for yourself to find out what was happening.

Pandorum wasn’t a huge success when it was released, but 16 years later, it’s still a great example of the sci-fi horror genre, offering plenty of twists and turns. Stream it for free on TubiAnd discover what Elysium has in store today.
