South Africa, on Monday (October 13), mounted another thrilling chase to beat Bangladesh by three wickets in the ongoing 2025 Women’s World Cup. This was their third win in a row and took them to third place in the points table.

Just like the match against India, where they were reeling at 81/5 before successfully chasing 252 runs, South Africa were reduced to 78/5 in pursuit of 233 runs. They got off to a good start and were level at 58/1 before suffering a collapse that saw them lose four wickets for just 20 runs.

The collapse occurred when captain Laura Wolvaardt was run out for 31 runs. Marizanne Kapp and Chloe Tryon then revived their team’s hopes by adding 85 runs for the sixth wicket. The partnership was broken by Nahida Akter in the 41st over when she dismissed Cape for 56 runs.

The match was tight at that stage with South Africa still needing 70 points. Kapp’s dismissal brought Nadine de Klerk into the middle. After achieving her heroics against India where she scored a match-winning 84, de Klerk starred with the bat once again to send her team home in thrilling fashion.

Tryon and De Klerk looked comfortable in the middle and looked set to finish the match off in South Africa’s favour. However, Bangladesh turned the match on its head by dismissing Tryon for 62, with the African side still needing 35 runs.

Bangladesh had a golden opportunity to strengthen their grip on the match when De Klerk missed the mark in the 49th minute, but Shurna Akter headed home from long range. It was a costly miss as De Klerk finished the contest by scoring four and six in the final. With eight needed, she hit the first ball of the fifty for a four before hitting the third ball for a six.

Bangladesh exceeds its competitive total against South Africa:

Earlier in the match, Bangladesh did well with the bat to post a competitive total of 232/6 in the allotted 50 overs. They reached the 200-point mark for the first time in the ongoing competition. All five of Bangladesh’s top batsmen started with the bat.

Of these five, Sharmeen Akhtar and Shurna Akhtar scored half-centuries. Bangladesh struggled to score at a decent pace in most of the innings but managed a competitive total thanks to Churna.

They were 164/4 in the 43rd over but eventually posted a total of over 230. Shurna hit three sixes and three fours to score 51 off just 35 balls and helped her side finish the match strong with the bat.

Summary of the match between South Africa and Bangladesh:

Bangladesh 232-6 (50 pts): Churna Aktiri 51* (35); Never Freedom Malaba 2-42

South Africa 235-7 (49.3 overs): Chloe Tryon 62 (69); Nahida Aktar 2-44

South Africa won 3-0
