Disney just dropped a sci-fi bomb in theaters, and another epic Tron flop

The latest chapter of the Tron series had a rough weekend. Tron: Ares The film earned $33 million domestically, despite being shown in 4,000 theaters across the country. The film also failed to attract foreign viewers, as it grossed only $27 million abroad.

Its $60 million opening weekend comes against the film’s $180 million budget, which confirms that Tron: Ares It did not even recover production expenses. The $180 million price tag reportedly does not include the film’s marketing budget, further reducing its profits.

The special effects scene performed well on big screens such as 3D and IMAX, and was generally rated well by audiences, receiving an 87% audience rating on Rotten tomatoes. However, it failed to gain a new audience outside of fans of the series, even among its target demographic. It was expected to gross nearly $50 million domestically, and there was a lot of optimism about the foreign box office.

And despite doing so horribly, Tron: Ares Dawn of competition. The next highest-grossing new release last weekend was Channing Tatum Roof manwhich earned just $8 million from its run on 3,340 screens nationally. the third, Spider Woman KissStarring Jennifer Lopez, it didn’t even exceed $1 million. Overall, it was just a bad weekend for new releases.

If anything would save Tron: Ares It’s a mystery how loyal fans of the franchise will be. Other Tron films didn’t do well at the box office either, but the 1982 original gathered such a cult following that it helped propel it. TRON: Legacy When it came out in 2010.

The latest release has all the elements that make a Tron movie: stunning special effects, a deep philosophical question about man versus machine, a great soundtrack by a prominent electronic composer (in this case, Nine Inch Nails), and Jeff Bridges Like Kevin Flynn. The series has endured and managed to spawn a sequel because it tells a good story with a lot of depth, one that keeps fans coming back for more, even 43 years after the original hit theaters. Public response to Tron: Ares It indicates that despite not performing at the box office, the film will confidently take its place in the franchise.
