The second day of Pakistan vs South Africa first test Lahore City witnessed a moment of high tension when Kyle Vereen became the center of an on-field confrontation after being sacked by Nauman Ali. The South African wicket-keeper-batsman was trapped in front of the stumps by a sharp turn in the delivery, leading to a controversial review and a heated exchange that sparked a stir on social media.
Kyle Verreynne’s LBW sparks a heated moment on the pitch
The accident occurred in the middle of the last session when Noman AliBowling from around the wicket, he released a faster ball that raced back sharply off middle stump. Verreynne attempted a sweep, completely misjudged the line and the ball hit him on the pads. Immediately, the Pakistani players revolted at the appeal, and the referee raised his finger without hesitation.
Verreynne opted to review the DRS, but replays confirmed Pakistan’s appeal – the Ultra Edge showed no contact with the bat and tracking the ball revealed a red three, leaving the batsman visibly frustrated as he made his way off the pitch. Moments later, television cameras captured images of Viren exchanging words with one of the Pakistani players near the border.
Before the situation escalated further, Hassan Ali quickly intervened to defuse the tension, directing Viren towards the wing. The brief altercation sparked strong reactions online, with fans discussing the intensity of the exchange and praising Hassan’s sportsmanship in preventing a potential confrontation.

Noman Ali shines as Pakistan maintains the upper hand
Apart from the brief clashes, it was Nauman Ali’s brilliant bowling performance that kept Pakistan in control of the match on a thrilling second day. His four-wicket haul, including the crucial dismissals of Aiden Markram, Wiaan Mulder and Kyle Verreynne, helped Pakistan restrict South Africa to 216/6 at stumps, still trailing by 162 runs.
Earlier in the day, Pakistan’s innings ended at 378, with Salman Agha narrowly missing out on his century after being dismissed for 93. South Africa’s spinners, in particular Senoran Muthusamy, dominated the morning session, taking his first five-wicket haul in Tests. His spell of 6 for 86 dismantled Pakistan’s lower order, showcasing the significant help available to the spin on the parched Lahore surface.
In response, despite losing early wickets, Tony De Zorzi and Ryan Rickelton anchored the South African innings with a decisive 90-run stand. Rickelton brought up his maiden Test fifty playing confident strokes, while De Zorzi counter-attacked effectively, reaching his half-century off just 63 balls.
However, Pakistan regained the momentum when Babar Azam hit a stunning one-handed catch at first slip to dismiss Rickleton. Nauman Ali then struck again to remove Viren, recording his fourth wicket of the innings and putting Pakistan back in control.
On stumps, De Zorzi (58 not out) and Muthusamy (4 not out) led South Africa to safety, setting up a thrilling battle on the third day.
