California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Monday signed the nation’s first law regulating artificial intelligence-powered chatbots, defying White House calls for a hands-off approach. The measure would require chatbot operators to implement safeguards for user interactions and allow for lawsuits if failures cause harm, said state Sen. Steve Padilla, the bill’s sponsor.
