Spider-Man: A Brand New Day It’s shaping up to be a packed movie. It features confirmed cameos from Scorpion, Hulk, and the Punisher, and rumored cameos from Daredevil and White Widow.

It was recently confirmed that Marvin Jones III will play Tombstone (he previously voiced the character in In the spider verse), and the online scoop Daniel RBK He claims that this villain will be in “direct conflict” with the Punisher. And that gives me serious hope for this movie because without his street-level antagonist, the Punisher’s appearance in A whole new day It would be a joke, because he can’t fight characters like Hulk and Scorpion effectively.

Punisher in over his head?

Marvel villain Tombstone

While no one knows what the exact plot is Spider-Man: A Brand New Day It would be a safe bet that the titular web-head would end up fighting the Hulk. It must be cool to see: Spidey is both powerful and creative, but the Hulk has been able to fend off countless alien invaders single-handedly in… Avengers. In the face of such a powerful threat, Spider-Man may be able to hold his own, however Punisher He will be helpless in over his head.

If you have any doubt about that, go back and watch movies like Batman Against Superman and Justice Leagueboth of which showed a very human Batman fighting against forces that were way outside his weight class. There was nothing Bruce Wayne could do against a rampaging monster like Doomsday (who was basically the DCEU’s answer to the Hulk), so he had to sit back and shoot little Kryptonite pellets while Superman and Wonder Woman did the real fighting. And when the entire Justice League fought Steppenwolf, Batman had to content himself with fighting Parademons’ minions because there was nothing he could do against the rampaging New God.

Punisher: Batman shot

Disney's Punisher Jon Bernthal

In case the analogy wasn’t obvious, the Punisher is Marvel’s killjoy-friendly answer to Batman, one who uses a combination of battle strategies and high-tech weaponry to take down his enemies. With the right equipment and a little prep time, the Punisher can fight and perhaps even defeat street-level characters like Spider-Man and reckless. But he would have no chance against the Hulk, and even Scorpio would be nearly impossible to take down with small arms fire.

That’s why I’m glad Tombstone is in the movie and will be a major antagonist for the Punisher. It seems so Spider-Man: A Brand New Day He gives his main heroes villains appropriate to their power levels. So, Spider-Man can focus on fighting the guy who put a god in his place, and Punisher can focus on fighting the guy who’s mostly pretty powerful and probably isn’t yet (in his first outing MCU Appearance) He also has superpowers that he later obtained in the comics.

Can Punisher save the MCU?

Jon Bernthal The Punisher

Now, I’m not saying this as someone who hates the Punisher; I’m actually one of the biggest fans of this character, and he’s the guy who thinks he’s Jon Bernthal Punisher The presentation was almost perfect and the Garth Ennis comic collection is required reading marvel Fans. Because of this, I want the character to be at her best in her big screen debut in the MCU. And I wouldn’t be the only fan who was very disappointed if this first appearance mostly had the Punisher shooting bulletproof guys and getting his ass handed to him.

It’s a pretty low bar, but I want Marvel to treat the Punisher better than Batman was treated in the DCEU. We should see how scary the character can be instead of looking like a useless extra in a movie binge full of characters with superpowers. Hopefully the presence of Tombstone will lead to some great Punisher battles; Otherwise, fan disappointment may be so severe that we’ll have to wait a few more decades to see Frank Castle on the big screen again.
