“Our showrunner is a collaborative artist and we had a bunch of meetings. He was sending me articles and interviews with other kids who were adopted (like Emily). He really wanted to delve into the concept of gratitude and kids wanting to be perfect. “I feel like I grew up with this — even though I wasn’t adopted — and I really connected myself to that idea,” she explained. “For my own personal way of identifying with Emily, I started keeping a diary and pretending I was Emily and I was home alone. I was living alone and I think it was really helpful to feel lonely and feel like no one was listening. Just talking into the void for hours as Emily helped me really pay attention to the nuances of what she thought her relationship with her family was.”

Dionisio He specifically wanted to highlight How Emily struggled to find her place.

“The big theme of the story is that she’s not white and she’s from a white family. She doesn’t really have that kind of society and Ethan still represents that. As the season went on, Dionisio was able to show Emily’s complicated place in the Brandeis family, adding: “I have a theory that Emily is a huge daddy’s girl. Her father and I were inseparable, which to me makes it even more difficult that this actually happened between them. I feel like they mirror each other a little bit at first. They’re both very avoidant and they’re both — even though they long for each other’s love And their companionship, tolerance and support – they are both being avoided from the situation.”
