Palestinian journalist Saleh Al-Jaafrawi was martyred during confrontations in Gaza City, a few days after Israel and Hamas reached a ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip.

Palestinian sources told Al Jazeera Arabic that the 28-year-old, who became famous for his videos covering the war, was shot dead by members of an “armed militia” while covering clashes in the city’s Sabra neighborhood.

Palestinian sources said that clashes took place between Hamas security forces and fighters from the Dughmush clan in Sabra on Sunday, although local authorities did not confirm this.

A senior source in the Ministry of Interior in Gaza told Al Jazeera Arabic that the clashes in Gaza City involved “an armed militia affiliated with the (Israeli) occupation.”

The source said that security forces imposed a siege on the militia, adding that “militia members” killed displaced people as they returned from southern Gaza to Gaza City.

Despite the recent ceasefire, local authorities have repeatedly warned that the security situation in Gaza remains challenging.

“I lived in fear every second”

In an interview with Al Jazeera JanuarySeveral days before the start of a temporary ceasefire in the war at the time, Al-Jaafrawi spoke about his experiences of displacement from northern Gaza.

Al-Jaafrawi said: “All the scenes and situations I went through during these 467 days will not be erased from my memory. All the situations we went through will never be able to forget.”

The journalist added that he received many threats from Israel because of his work.

He said: “Honestly, I lived in fear every second, especially after I heard what the Israeli occupation was saying about me. I was living life second after second, not knowing what the next second would bring.”

In the deadliest conflict ever for journalists, more than 270 media workers have been killed in Gaza since the Israeli war began in October 2023.

Al-Jaafrawi’s death comes as the current ceasefire in Gaza holds for a third day Expected exchange of hostages and prisoners.

US President Donald Trump is scheduled to meet with other world leaders on Monday in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm El-Sheikh for the Gaza summit hosted by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.

The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Sunday that a “document to end the war in the Gaza Strip” would be signed during the “historic” meeting. Neither Israel nor Hamas will be represented in the talks.
