Jayden Sales fights ICC fine for brutal throw on Yashasvi Jaiswal, but conviction is upheld

West Indies fast bowler Jayden Seals has been in trouble as the International Cricket Council (ICC) has imposed a hefty fine on him for his misconduct during the ongoing second Test against India at the Arun Jaitley Cricket Stadium in New Delhi.

The incident, which occurred on Day 1, involved Jayden Sills dangerously throwing the ball towards an Indian player out of frustration, and the act is a Level 1 violation of the ICC Code of Conduct.

The ICC confirmed that Sales breached Article 2.9 of the Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Staff, which relates to “throwing a ball (or any other item of cricket equipment) at or near a player in an inappropriate and/or dangerous manner during an international match”.

In addition to a fine of 25% of the match fee, Sales also received one demerit point, taking his tally to two points in 24 months. His previous offense came during a Test against Bangladesh in December 2024.

Jayden Seales’ aggressive throw at Yashasvi Jaiswal earned an ICC penalty

During the 29th over of India’s first innings, Jayden Seales sent the ball in his follow-up and, in a moment of frustration, bowled it straight at Yashasvi Jaiswal, which ended up hitting him on the pads while the Indian opener was safely inside his crease.

This action immediately caught the attention of field officials. However, Sells said the throw was a real attempt at evasion. The incident led to a formal hearing after Sales objected to the penalty proposed by Andy Beecroft of the elite panel of match referees at the UAE International Chamber of Commerce.

Despite his defence, Andy Beecroft reviewed multiple angles of the reboot and decided the act was unnecessary and inappropriate. The match referee confirmed that the throw was made in an aggressive manner and was not a genuine attempt to clear Yashavi Jaiswal.

The charge was then formally given by on-field umpires Richard Illingworth and Paul Revell, third umpire Alex Wharfe, and fourth umpire KN Ananthapadmanabhan. As a result, the West Indies player was found guilty of a Level 1 breach of the ICC Code of Conduct.

Such offenses can result in penalties ranging from a formal reprimand to a fine of up to 50% of the match fee, plus one or two penalty points.

West Indies battle in Delhi Test against India

Meanwhile, the West Indies were bowled out for just 248 in their first innings, still 270 runs behind India’s 518. Kuldeep Yadav was the chief destroyer, spinning a net around the Windies’ bats to claim a thrilling five-wicket haul on the third day.

The left arm’s sharp turn and control broke the resistance of the middle order and ensured that India remained in command. Earlier on day three, West Indies were reeling at 217 for 8 at lunch before being dismissed soon after. India then enforced the follow-on, forcing the visitors to bat again.

However, West Indies got off to a poor start in the second innings as well, losing two early wickets before John Campbell stepped up. Compact and patient play in the West Indies opener helped India’s fiery attack stabilize the innings, taking the team to 167 for 2.

Apart from Campbell, Shai Hope also looks in good form against India. Campbell (86*) and Shai (64*) have already put together a 135* run partnership to bridge the gap between the two sides. Currently, the West Indies run is 98 on day three of the ongoing Delhi Test.
