Interestingly, the former Reds defender has never played against Rangers in his career but has featured on three occasions against Celtic.

In the 1997/98 season, Carragher was an unused substitute in a 2-2 draw at Celtic Park in the first round of the UEFA Cup. In the second leg, Carragher started as the Reds progressed on away goals in a 0–0 draw at Anfield.

When the two teams met again in the UEFA Cup quarter-finals in the 2002/03 season, Carragher played every minute of the match as the Hoops won 3-1 on aggregate.

Martin O’Neill’s side would go on to reach the final at the Olimpico in a historic European run before losing to Jose Mourinho’s Porto 3-2 in extra time.

Carragher chooses between Celtic and Rangers

Players and managers not associated with Celtic or Rangers are often asked who they prefer, and Carragher is no different.

Speaking on the American network CBS Sports while covering the Champions League in 2024, Carragher was asked to choose between Celtic and Rangers By fellow critic Micah Richards. The former England defender simply said:

Steven Gerrard, Carragher’s long-time teammate at Anfield, left his position as Rangers manager in 2021, leading to Carragher’s return to the green and white.

After winning the Scottish Premiership at Ibrox, Gerrard had a successful spell in charge of the Gers but left for Aston Villa.

His time at Villa Park was not as positive as he had hoped, leading to Gerrard moving to Saudi Arabia with an agreement until 2025.
