Tokyo Japanese media said that eight people were injured in a hammer attack at a Tokyo university on Friday, and a 22-year-old student was arrested at the scene. Japanese Broadcasting Corporation (NHK) reported that all the injured were conscious, and quoted police sources as saying that the attack occurred in the afternoon on the Tama Campus of Hosei University.

NHK and other media said the attacker, a sociology student, brandished a hammer during class. Several reports stated that people were seen bleeding from their heads and that the woman said she felt pent up frustration at being ignored. The woman was reportedly arrested at the scene.

Police did not immediately confirm details of what appears to be a rare case of violent crime in Japan.

Hosei University was founded in 1880 as a law school and has 15 colleges, according to its website.

In December, a middle school student was stabbed to death and another was injured at a McDonald’s restaurant in southwestern Japan. A man was later arrested over the attack. The teens were queuing to order food at around 8:30pm when the attacker entered the restaurant in Kitakyushu and stabbed them.

In January 2022, three people were stabbed outside the prestigious University of Tokyo ahead of nationwide university entrance exams. Police said at the time that the victims were an 18-year-old boy, a 17-year-old girl, and a 72-year-old man.
