Max Griesserman and Xander Scheufele share the lead after Saturday’s third round of the PayCurrent Classic in Japan.

In the wet conditions, Greyserman, seeking his first PGA Tour title, finished 71 points behind Schauffele’s 67 at Yokohama Country Club – both had a 12-under 201.

Heading into the final round, five players were three strokes behind, including defending champion Nico Echavarría (69), Michael Thorbjornsen (66), Byung-Hun Ahn (66), Jarek Hijo (68) and Si Woo Kim (69).

However, it’s a different story for Schauffele, who can add to a lengthy resume on Sunday that includes two major championships, a gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, and several other PGA Tour titles — though he was winless last year.

For Schauffele, a win will be especially emotional because it’s where his mother grew up – a perfect way to end his drought.

He said: “It will definitely be special. My grandparents are here, and my mother grew up here with her brother as well.”

“That’s a long way from now, but yeah, thinking about the future, it’s going to be an incredible feeling.”

In his way stands Greyserman, who has been in the lead, either alone or in combination, since the first round and is still holding on.

“Obviously I think me and Xander are even, so I wanted to extend my lead more, play better today and all that stuff, but you’re not going to play great 72 holes in a row,” he said.
