Manchester United appear to have been given a boost in their quest to sign Bayern Munich central defender Dayot Upamecano.
The Red Devils have been linked with Upamecano by Bild Recently, and now Christian Falk He provided an important update on the France international’s situation.
Writing in his latest edition Exclusive CF Bayern Insider column, Falk He denied reports that Bayern had made progress on a new contract with Upamecano.
The prominent German journalist explained that talks have been going on for some time, but the sign-on bonus appears to be a major issue.
As Falk mentioned Liverpool and Real Madrid are possible destinations for Upamecano.
Dayot Upamecano is no closer to signing a new contract with Bayern Munich
Discussing Upamecano’s contract situation, Falk said: “There is a kind of agreement between Bayern and Upamecano regarding the basic salary, because he will be a free agent in the summer, but there is always a signing fee! And the signing fee is an issue in these talks.”

“You have Alphonso Davies at Bayern Munich and he was in the same situation last year. The Canadian got a lot of money, we heard around €20m-€22m (£17.4m-£19.1m), just for the signing fee! Upamecano, of course, knows that and was wondering, ‘What about? for me Signing fee?
“If he goes to another club like Liverpool, he will receive a signing fee as a free agent. Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain are also interested. So, this is really difficult for Bayern because the team’s wage bill is already high, and there is a target in place to reduce this by 20% for the whole team. That makes things really difficult.”
“I heard that the difference between what Bayern Munich wants to pay and what Upamecano wants is still very big.”
Where’s next for Dayot Upamecano?
Upamecano could be a good signing for United, who look in need of more signings in a few positions at the moment.
The 26-year-old is one of the best defensive players in Europe on his day, and it seems clear that he could fit in well at either United or Liverpool.
Ruben Amorim could do well to bring in more experience alongside talented young defenders like Lenny Euro and Aiden Heaven, but it remains to be seen whether Upamecano will be tempted by Manchester United if clubs like Liverpool are also involved.
Upamecano could certainly also have a key role in Arne Slot’s backline as Liverpool have Ibrahima Konate towards the end of his contract, while they could also deal with a younger player to come in as Virgil van Dijk turns 35 next season.
