Indian skipper Shubman Gill reached another triple-figure score in the longest format of the game. This marks Gill’s 10th Test, the most by any Indian cricketer in the history of the World Test Championship, and his 500th in 7 Tests after being appointed captain of the Indian team.

Shubman Gill leads from the front as India dominates West Indies on home soil at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. Although he was initially responsible for being the root of Yashavi Jaiswal’s dismissal earlier this morning, Gill held his nerve and made it to his 10th Test.

India had scored a massive target of 518 at the loss of 5 wickets in their innings before this was announced. Dhruv Gurriel, the centurion from the previous match, was dismissed for 44 by the West Indian skipper, and the Indians decided to end the matter, with Shubman Gill not out on an unbeaten score of 129*.

Yashasvi Jaiswal ruled the first day of the second Test as he dominated with a mammoth 173 on home soil and received a lot of praise for his brilliant innings, which belittled the West Indian bowlers. Shubman Gill had just started his innings during the final session on the first day.

However, after Jaiswal’s early run out, it was Gill who took command of the Indian innings on day two and scored a stunning hundred, building on partnerships with Nitish Kumar Reddy and Dhruv Gurel. Both batsmen missed half-centuries after being dismissed in a dreadful 40 over.

This hundred marked Shubman Gill’s 5th hundred as captain of the Indian team and it came in the span of just 7 Test matches. Shubman, with his 10th Test, has surpassed former captain Rohit Sharma (9 hundreds) as he has scored the most Test hundreds in the history of the ICC World Test Championship, which began in 2019.

Gill equals Virat Kohli in the unique captaincy record

Besides surpassing the previous skipper, Shubman Gill has also earned a name for himself in the list of legends. He has now equaled Virat Kohli’s record of the most tons for India in a single year as Test captain.

Kohli had previously scored 5 centuries each as India’s Test captain in 2017 and 2018, having played 16 and 24 innings respectively. Gill also hit 5 tons but in just 12 innings and is yet to play the Test series against South Africa this year.

Shubman Gill almost surpassed Sunil Gavaskar’s long-standing record of most runs by an Indian captain on English soil. However, he missed it by a hair. This time too, he is behind only Sunil Gavaskar in the list of Indian captains who have reached 5 Test hundreds in the least number of innings.

While Gavaskar holds the record with just 10 runs under his belt, Gill has surpassed Virat Kohli, who reached the same feat in 18 Test innings.
