Peacemaker Season 2 almost featured a great Marvel show – which is why James Gunn cut it

According to Gann:

“Yes, I wanted them to open the door and see Deadpool in the room. I talked to Ryan Reynolds about it, and we had to go through some pretty big hurdles to do it. He wanted to do it. That’s all anyone’s going to talk about now is fucking Deadpool in the other room.”

Honestly, if someone opened a door-shaped can of worms like this, you can guarantee that comic book fans would have a mild panic attack. Really, there’s something just right about the idea of ​​John Cena’s Peacemaker and Reynolds’ Wade Wilson meeting – two of the most popular superheroes on screen. But even though that didn’t happen this time, does the fact that a direct Marvel/DC crossover has been seriously discussed make the possibility of it happening that much closer to reality?

As it is, Gunn’s DCU has already referenced the Marvel Universe on two separate occasions. First, Dr. Phosphorus (Alan Tudyk) was referenced as Ghost Rider in “Creature Commandos,” while both Vigilantes (Freddie Stroma) flipped out while making a Spider-Man reference in Season 2 Episode 6 of “Peacemaker.” And while these may just be gags, Gunn has explicitly discussed the possibility of crossovers with characters from different comic book universes colliding with each other. The only problem? There has to be a good technical reason for doing this beyond “just because”.

“I think people want to see good stories with their superheroes, and that’s what matters. And they want to see different types of stories with their superheroes. And people love superheroes. That’s obvious, but they need more variety, and they just need more quality in the storytelling,” Gunn theorized in an interview with Rolling Stone. “And just having Spider-Man and Superman team up isn’t going to make it happen if that’s the case. So, it has to come from a real place, and it’s very difficult to make that work.”

Given these comments and news about a Deadpool cameo that never happened, it seems like Gunn isn’t completely against a Marvel Cinematic Universe/DC Universe crossover at some point; It should only serve an actual narrative purpose. For now, let’s be happy that Gunn does a good job of rebuilding one universe from scratch before he even thinks about peeking at another.
