Why there are no plans for a third season for Peacemaker, according to James Gunn

“The Peacemaker” ended its second season with a finale that was low on pointless cameos, but high on emotional payoff and character moments. James Gunn had a great sophomore season Where his band of misfits dealt with their traumas, made terrible choices, discovered the Nazi dimension, listened to some rock music, and ultimately came out the other side stronger together because of it. Those who expected another Justice League -style appearance at the end haven’t seen the show proper, because “Peacemaker” was never really about that.

However, the ending also made big moves that had ramifications for the entire DC Universe. The 11th Street Kids gain new members, former ARGUS employees Langston Fleury (Tim Meadows), Sasha Bordeaux (Sol Rodriguez), and Judomaster (Nhut Le), and decide to form their own covert operations agency called Checkmate, to do good that… ARGUS does it. Oh, and the finale also ended with a big cliffhanger for our favorite complicated hero, Christopher Smith (John Cena), who is stranded in an alternate universe that Rick Flag Sr. (Frank Grillo) means to use as an inter-dimensional prison.

With such great suspense, ‘Peacemaker’ should get a confirmed third season soon to resolve its issues, right? right? Well, not so fast. In an interview with Delivery time After the Season 2 finale aired, James Gunn confirmed that he is not planning a third season for “Peacemaker,” at least not yet.

“It’s about the broader central console and other stories that this will be featured in now. That doesn’t mean there won’t be anything,” Gunn said. “I don’t want to say never, never, but right now, no, it’s about the future of the digital console. It’s an important figure.”

Sure, Gunn may be twisting the truth here to maintain some secrecy around the DCU. However, it would make sense for this to be true. “The Peacemaker” will not be returning for season 3, but that doesn’t mean the characters won’t appear on TV again. As Gunn said later in the interview, “You’ll definitely see Checkmate continue as if it’s something that exists now, so it’s part of what’s going to happen.”

This is key, as Gunn is not only putting the “Peacemaker” cast in stasis, but they will be important to what comes next. It’s pretty clear that this season is directly setting up the events of Superman II, Man of Tomorrow, and perhaps beyond. If you’re not familiar with comics, Checkmate has a long and important history within the DC Universe as a spy agencyIt’s very possible that Gunn will simply bring the characters back to the “Checkmate” TV show rather than a new season of “Peacemaker,” with the story focusing on the larger team rather than just Chris.

Since becoming DC president, James Gunn has been talking about synergy being a key element in his plans for the universe. Characters will move from TV to film, and from live action to animation and back, as long as they serve a story. Nothing is on the table and nothing is 100% independent. This means we could see the end of “Peacemaker” for now, but we’ll still see the characters appear in other DC projects, just as Cena’s Peacemaker appeared briefly in “Superman,” only to return in a few years once Checkmate is a permanent part of the universe. Gunn says in the interview that Peacemaker is an important character moving forward in the DCU, so none of the characters are going anywhere.
