West Indies left-arm spinner Jomel Warricane overcame India opener KL Rahul to give his side the first breakthrough in the second and final Test. Warricane dismissed the right-handed batsman in India’s first innings on Day 1 (Friday, October 10) in the ongoing match at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.

India captain Shubman Gill won the toss and elected to bat first. Team India retained the same line-up that registered an innings win and 140 runs in the series opener. The West Indies made two changes to their squad, bringing in Tevin Imlach and Anderson Phillip in place of Brandon King and Johan Lin.

Warrican made an impact in attack for the first time. The left-arm pacer dismissed the Indian batsman for 38 runs. Rahul came up the track trying to attack, but the ball swerved sharply wide, hitting his bat and allowing wicket-keeper Tevin Imlach to complete the knock.

Rahul, who had scored a century in the previous Test, looked visibly frustrated as he was once again outclassed by Warrican in the series. This breakthrough ended India’s promising opening stand and lifted West Indies’ morale early in the innings.

KL Rahul scored 38 runs before he was dismissed on the first day

KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal added 58 runs for the opening wicket. Rahul was stumped for 38 off 54 balls, including five fours and a six. He smashed six from Jhari Pierre before being sacked.

The right-hander will regret not taking advantage of another strong start, especially given his elite form. Rahul has been in top form since the England tour and continued that momentum in the first Test against the West Indies, where he notched his 11th Test century.

The batsman scored 100 off 197 balls, recording his second home century and his sixth World Test Championship. He ranks third among Indian batsmen in the WTC, behind only Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma, who have each scored nine centuries.

India beat West Indies in the first Test within three days

India dominated the opening Test at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, thrashing the West Indies by an innings and 140 runs in the space of three days, marking one of their most comprehensive victories against the visitors. Shubman Gill’s team took crucial points in the World Test Championship.

After opting to bat first, the visitors were bowled out for just 162, with Mohammed Siraj taking four wickets and Jasprit Bumrah adding three. India responded strongly with KL Rahul, Dhruv Jurel and Ravindra Jadeja all scoring centuries.

Jadeja later impressed with the ball again, taking four wickets to seal the emphatic victory. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill failed to convert their promising starts, while Sai Sudharsan continued to struggle at number three, adding pressure on his place in the line-up.
