An autopsy will begin in New York today after the Yankees’ hopes of returning to the World Series were ended in emphatic fashion by the Toronto Blue Jays – and Alex Rodriguez knows where to point the finger of blame.
The Yankees lost Game 4 of the American League Division Series 5-2 to the Blue Jays at Yankee Stadium and the series 3-1.
It was a dismal end to a season that promised so much and the stark reality is that the Yankees’ wait for their first world title since 2009 will continue.
“It’s hard to describe,” star player Aaron Judge said. “We didn’t do our job, we didn’t complete the goal. We had a special group here, a lot of special players who made this year enjoyable, but we didn’t get the ultimate prize, so we failed.”
Added second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr.: “We all thought we were the team that was going to win the World Series.
“But baseball is baseball. We all know that baseball can take a turn any way at any time. Baseball favors no one.”
There will be changes this summer but not a complete overhaul of a roster that finished with a 94-68 record, the best in the AL.
Cody Bellinger, Paul Goldschmidt and Trent Grisham hit free agency, which could create problems at first base and in the outfield.
But the staff will be bolstered by the return of star Gerrit Cole, who is coming off Tommy John surgery.
Rodriguez supports Boone staying with the Yankees
There will be questions for director Aaron Boone.
Bon himself spoke in a confident tone when asked about his future, saying: “I am under contract, so, no, I do not expect anything.”
14-time All-Star A-Rod, who was a central figure in the Yankees’ last World Series success 16 years ago, believes Boone is a victim of front office mismanagement.
Speaking on FS1’s postgame show, he said: “Honestly, out of the entire organization, (Aaron Boone) is the guy I would circle around and the one I would blame the least for. He’s got a lot of talent, but for me personally, he’s one of the worst roster builds I’ve ever seen.”
“You’ve got three left-handers, you’ve got five DHs, you’ve got a first baseman who’s in and out. It’s just a very tough hand for Boone.
“And frankly, they were exposed to a much better Jays team.”
