Chandler Moore is suing his former band Maverick City Music for fraud

Shortly after the lawsuit was published, Maverick City Music co-founder Jonathan Jay issued his own statement, strongly denying the serious allegations against the band.

According to a report from Bulletin boardMoore, who joined the group during its inception in 2018, filed a lawsuit against Maverick City Music in Atlanta federal court on October 1.

According to legal documents, Moore’s lawsuit names several companies, including Maverick City Music, its TRIBL Records label, and Gyamfi, who served as Moore’s personal manager before becoming the band’s CEO in 2023.

The suit wasted no time in telling the court that Moore believed he had been duped by Gyamfi and that the CEO had “abused his power and the trust Moore placed in him.”

The documents go on to indicate that things between Moore and Gyamfi started to become tense in 2021, when the latter allegedly sold the Maverick City Music masters to The Orchard, a subsidiary of Sony Music, without informing Moore that he would receive financial compensation from the deal.

Moore claims that Gyamfi directed Essential Music Publishing, the Christian music publishing division of Sony Music, to pay Moore full rights to write songs for the band in his stead, and also claims that Gyamfi forged his signature to make this happen.

In the lawsuit, Moore also stated that Gyamfi and his business partners withheld more than $800,000 in royalties owed to him under his new contract, despite him fulfilling obligations that included releasing new music and completing a tour.

Ultimately, Moore claims in the lawsuit that Gyamfi stole millions of dollars from him during his time with Maverick City Music and also accused him of serious crimes, including “breach of contract” and “forgery and diversion.”

Moore’s attorney, Sam Lipshy, issued a statement on October 7, saying their firm was “privileged to represent Chandler Moore,” and later described him as “an exceptional artist and human being.”

“Like many talented creators and performers, Chandler has encountered situations where his confidence and talent were taken advantage of in various ways,” Lipshy said. “We are fully committed to helping Chandler reclaim what is rightfully his, resolve the outstanding legal issues, and help him move forward freely to continue building the brightest and most impactful career that lies ahead of him.”

Maverick City Music co-founder Jonathan Jay issued a statement on the band’s official Instagram account, strongly denying the accusations against him, the band, and his business partner Gyamfi.

“To be clear: the allegations against me, Norman, and our companies are categorically false,” the statement read. “Our business dealings with Chandler have been frank, generous, and above reproach. We have acted in good faith, given above and beyond what was asked for, and have consistently extended grace. Any allegations of misdeeds are simply not true, and we welcome a full and honest examination, because the truth will speak for itself.”

In an emotional post shared online, Moore announced his departure from Maverick City Music, stating that he has spent the past two years intentionally focusing on his life and career.
