As Ibrox staff continue to search for a new manager, a former Rangers The Star told them to go and get a Championship manager who would join the club “in a heartbeat”.

Rangers schedule manager talks

As things stand, it is Steven Gerrard Who tops Rangers’ list of candidates to replace Russell Martin. The former Aston Villa manager is reportedly set to hold talks with the 49ers this week as they look to welcome him back to Ibrox for the first time since he left for the Midlands in 2021.

While return talks are set to be far from simple, Gerrard recently admitted as much “Unfinished Business” In the artistic field after failed periods in Saudi Arabia and the Premier League.

“I would like to give it another try at some point. I want to change some things, improve some things and come back refreshed, with a few different people around me.

“I’d like to have a few other challenges while doing this and that’s what I’m working on in the background at the moment. A few different ideas, a few different people around me.

“Now I’m enjoying my time with family and doing a lot of things that I didn’t get to do. But there’s a part of me that still feels like there’s a little bit of unfinished business in terms of wanting to get in and take on a couple more exciting challenges.”

He is looking for an opportunity to restore his coaching career, and the Rangers job represents the perfect opportunity for Gerrard. He’s already been there and done that – winning Scottish Premier League In 2021 – and there is no doubt that the bell needs a transformation similar to the one he oversaw four years ago.

However, it is not the best option for everyone. Instead, according to one former player, Rangers should target an impressive manager in the Championship.

Ross McCormack: Lampard will join Rangers ‘quickly’

Speaking on the Open Goal podcast, the former Ibrox player Ross McCormack has dropped his name from Frank Lampard When asked who he thought Rangers should target he claimed the Chelsea legend would leave Coventry for the Gers “in a heartbeat”.

The former striker said: “If you could get one for me, it would be Lampard, having seen what he is like. I think you would leave Coventry in a heartbeat to go to Rangers.”

If Lampard is available it will be hard to argue with McCormack. The Chelsea legend has got his managerial career back on track at Coventry City, who have looked unstoppable in the Championship so far this season – and are unbeaten after nine games.

But the frustrating truth for Rangers fans is that Lampard is unlikely to abandon his current project now that he is in such a promising position. The former Coventry and Everton manager has his sights set on the Premier League. This is something that even Rangers are unlikely to snag.

Instead, the 49ers may have to settle for another legendary midfielder in England.
