You can have ChatGPT make you a Spotify playlist. But why?

There’s something sacred about creating a playlist.

It’s not just about pulling songs into your queue. It’s about building a perfect atmosphere, like a scaffold for solid emotional architecture. Music plays a transformative role in the soundtrack of our lives. Some melodies can take us back to a specific moment in our history. A lyric can hit us right in the gut like a sucker punch. A song can remind you of home or make you feel closer to a special person far away. A good playlist isn’t about algorithmic compatibility. It’s about instinct and love in many ways.

Now, it seems, ChatGPT It can do that for you.

At OpenAI’s development day on Monday, CEO Sam Altman said Provided the company’s latest SDK implementationswhich allows developers to plug their services directly into ChatGPT. One of the first integrations is Spotify, along with ZillowCoursera and others. The idea is that you can ask ChatGPT to “create a playlist for a dinner party” or other occasion, and it will pull songs directly from Spotify, without any clicking, thinking, or organizing required.

Of course, I didn’t want to throw something out without trying it first.

When I clicked on ChatGPT, I simply started typing “Spotify” into the box, and the interface recognized the app. I led with the prompt: “Spotify Can you help me create a playlist for a Halloween party? I need a playlist that’s mostly geared toward people in their mid-20s to 40s, but will be safe for kids who trick-or-treat or enjoy listening to. “No, I don’t want a Monster Mash or anything too obvious.”

Once I hit enter, ChatGPT asked me to log into my Spotify account and agree to let ChatGPT access my account, which I really hated doing. (I revoked access immediately after this exercise.)

She put together a “Spooky Halloween Party Mix” that leaned heavily into 90s and early 2000s dance music, with a mix of pop, rock and alternative. The playlist included some artists I like (Florence and the Machine, Billie Eilish), but mostly artists I rarely listen to and songs I’d never heard of before.

Honestly, it was very strange to review the songs she chose, knowing that I had never heard most of them before. I wouldn’t feel comfortable wearing it to a party without knowing if it’s actually any good. I certainly don’t want to confront my music-loving friends and sheepishly explain to them that the reason the playlist is bad is because ChatGPT made it.

Isn’t the point of a Halloween party playlist so I can share it with my friends? Shouldn’t I have a reason to share those songs?

Well, sure. It’s convenient. But I can’t help but think, do we really need this?

Spotify is already working on more AI than most of us realize. His daily mixes, Find out weekly Made for You playlists are scarily good at guessing what songs you want to hear. If you want a smooth, machine-generated soundtrack, Spotify has been what you need… for years. The magic of these features is that they appear instantly and quietly, and are there just in case you need to put something on for a quick drive or walk the dog.

So what exactly does ChatGPT add here? Another step between you and the thing you already have? A conversational interface for an algorithm that was already working its own way?

Music is one of the few parts of the Internet that still feels very personal. Curating a playlist — whether it’s for a party, a breakup, or just to survive a Tuesday workday — is an act of caring. Handing that over to a chatbot feels like outsourcing the fun part.

It’s becoming increasingly clear that OpenAI wants ChatGPT to be the global interface for everything. But there is something to be said for preserving humanity in how we construct and share art that changes, shapes, and directs our lives. Some things simply don’t need to be automated.
