Fox ‘Prison Break’ got a new lease of life when the series hit Netflix In 2024. Which makes sense, because the series, which debuted in 2005, is the perfect must-see series. The story revolves around Michael Scofield (Wentworth Miller), an engineer who is sent to prison so that he can break himself and his brother Lincoln Burroughs (Dominic Purcell) out of said prison. Thus begins an exciting adventure where people escape from prison, escape, escape from other prisons, and fake their deaths.

Despite its narrative silliness, the Paul Scheuring-created show is a bit of an addictive watch (particularly in the first two seasons, which flaunt a keen sense of urgency as the characters launch their first prison break and go to the lam). The escape scenes are so suspenseful that you might find yourself rooting for the most despicable criminals to break free, which is a testament to the series’ thrilling sequences and strong characters.

“Prison Break” has been canceled after five seasonsbut its premise could easily be applied to an entirely new series with new characters emerging from confinement — and that’s the plan. It was only a matter of time until the property was revived and reimagined for contemporary audiences, with Hulu identified as a planned destination for the reboot. With that in mind, what can viewers expect from the new “Prison Break” movie?

Hulu’s Prison Break reboot doesn’t have a release date yet

It’s worth noting that “Jailbreak” hasn’t been officially picked up by Hulu yet. 20th Television has commissioned Elgin James, co-creator of the “Sons of Anarchy” spin-off “Mayans MC,” to write a pilot for the streaming service in December 2024, but a full series order will depend on the pilot inspiring the company’s higher-ups to greenlight the show. However, Marty Adelstein, one of the producers of the reboot series, previously provided a reassuring update during an interview with Delivery time:

“It’s going really well. The first script was done really well. They’ve given feedback, and it seems like it’s on its way.”

Assuming all goes according to plan, the planned “Prison Break” reboot likely won’t arrive until 2026 at the earliest, but there aren’t any tentative release dates in mind at this moment. But the good news is that the pilot episode was filmed in Moundsville, West Virginia in June 2025, so at least the series is making some progress. So, with that out of the way, what can viewers expect from the new “Prison Break” movie, assuming it goes forward on Hulu?

What are the plot details of the Prison Break reboot?

The new “Prison Break” movie will reportedly center around inmates at a co-ed facility where no inmates have escaped in more than 100 years. As of this writing, the main characters include a corrections officer with a military background, a politician, a wrongly convicted criminal, an influential criminal who calls the shots, a pregnant woman whose child another inmate has given birth to, and a detective.

Details about the plot are being kept under wraps for now, but it’s certain that a jailbreak will happen – or at least attempt one – from some of the characters locked behind bars. The mixed prison is also a new twist on the material, with the previous series taking place within the walls of a men’s prison that only houses two female staff.

Despite the differences from the original series, the new “Prison Break” is set in the same universe as its predecessor, so the door is theoretically open to some crossover between both shows. However, will any of the old school characters return for another romp?

Who is the cast of the Prison Break reboot?

Hulu’s “Prison Break” has already assembled an impressive cast of performers to play the heroes and cons. “Sucker Punch” star Emily Browning will play Cassidy Collins, the aforementioned corrections officer, while Lucas Gage will play Jackson, a politician set to begin his first stint in Congress. Elsewhere, Drake Rodgers (whom some viewers will know from… ‘Supernatural’ spin-off ‘The Winchesters’ has been canceled) He plays the role of a prisoner. Lili Taylor, Margo Martindale, Donal Logue, and Ray McKinnon make up the rest of the main cast, playing Carole Mullen, Warden Jessica Strand, Holt Keane, and Detective Joe Dahl, respectively. Details about their personalities remain vague at the moment, but a couple of them are pretty self-explanatory.

Unfortunately, for long-term fans, that doesn’t seem to be the case Original “Prison Break” cast members It will come back to reboot. Wentworth Miller previously revealed that he is no longer interested in playing Michael Scofield again, as he does not want to play straight characters in the future. With that in mind, viewers shouldn’t get their hopes up about seeing Michael escape from another prison.

Of course, that doesn’t mean some of Miller’s old colleagues can’t attend in some capacity — but if that’s the plan, the reboot’s creators are keeping it well guarded. However, we will find out all the answers if “Prison Break” hits the small screen.
