Scientists Susumo Kitagawa, Richard Robson and Omar Yaji won the Nobel Chemistry Award for 2025 to develop a new form of molecular architecture, which leads to materials that can help in facing challenges such as climate change and freshwater deficiency.
Three holders work to create molecular construction with large spaces through which gases and other chemicals can be flowing that can be used to harvest water from desert air, capture carbon dioxide or store toxic gases.
The academy said that some of these materials have a significantly large surface space – a porous substance in the same amount of small sugar cube that can contain a large surface area like a large football field.
“A small amount of these materials can be like the Hermium handbag in Harry Potter. It can store huge amounts of gas in a small size,” said Olov Ramsters, a member of the Nobel Chemistry Committee.

Commitee said their breakthroughs have grown over several years, starting with Robson in 1989, including Kitagawa and Yaghi contributions between 1992 and 2003.
Kitagawa, 74, a professor at Kyoto University in Japan, 88 -year -old Robson as a professor at the 60 -year -old University of Melbourne and Yaji, born in Jordan, is a professor at the University of California Berkeley.
Ketagawa told the Nobel Press Conference that he was deeply honored by the award.
“My dream is to pick up the air and separate the air to – for example, in carbon dioxide), oxygen, water or something – and convert this into useful materials using renewable energy,” he said.
The Nobel Awards, which are also distributed to distinguished achievements in physics, chemistry, literature and peace, come with a prize amount of 11 million Swedish ($ 1.6 million CDN).
The Literature Award will be awarded on Thursday, and the Nobel Peace Prize will be announced on Friday. The Economy Award will be announced on October 13.
The Nobel Prizes will be presented to the beasts at a ceremony on December 10, the anniversary of the death of the Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel.
