Real Madrid will wait with bated breath to discover the extent of Dean Huyson’s injury that has forced him out of the Spain squad.
Huijsen was substituted this morning in the group that will face Georgia and Bulgaria next week due to an unspecified muscle problem.
He will be replaced by Aymeric Laporte, who has now returned to Athletic Bilbao after moving from Al-Nassr last month. The 31-year-old has not played for Spain since their UEFA Nations League appearance in November 2024.
A Spanish press release stated the following: “Dean Huysen suffers an injury and has withdrawn from the national team squad for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Georgia in Elche and Bulgaria in Valladolid.
“The Real Madrid defender arrived on Monday night with symptoms of muscle fatigue. On Tuesday, he did not train and informed his club that the development was not positive. On Wednesday morning, he underwent a medical examination that confirmed the muscle injury that he had previously informed Real Madrid of. We wish him a speedy recovery.
“Aymeric Laporte will join the team as his replacement.”
Madrid hopes Huijsen will recover soon
It is worrying for Real Madrid with a number of important matches on the horizon after the international break.
The team resumes domestic matches with a trip to Getafe on October 19 before facing Juventus in the Champions League at the Santiago Bernabeu three days later. The following weekend, Real Madrid hosts Barcelona in the first Clásico of the season.
Huijsen has been hugely impressive since joining Madrid from Bournemouth over the summer. He has played in seven of his eight La Liga matches and is arguably the first-choice centre-back.
