Former colleague of the head coach of the India national cricket team Gautam GambhirRobin Uthappa, Support Ajit Agarkar– Decision of the selection committee led by Rohit Sharma as ODI captain.
Robin Uthappa also issued a reminder about the things that happened during the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which made life difficult for the Indian team on the tour of Australia.
In all honesty, he will be 41 when the World Cup comes around. right? – Robin Uthappa on Rohit Sharma
Rohit Sharma was stripped of the ODI captaincy ahead of the tour of Australia, bringing an end to his illustrious captaincy career in international cricket.
Your daily dose of cricket!
In 2024, he himself gave up the captaincy by retiring from the T20I format after winning the T20 World Cup, stepping down as Test captain and retiring from the format ahead of the 2025 Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.
His Test retirement came after India’s loss in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy and a lot of drama surrounding it. It is worth noting that Rohit Sharma skipped the test series The opener stayed with his family after the birth of his son, and on his return, he gave a poor batting performance.
In five innings, Rohit Sharma scored just 31 runs and opted out of the fifth Test in Sydney, handing back the captaincy to Jasprit BumrahWho led India to victory in the first Test. However, India ended up losing the series 1-3.
Meanwhile, speaking on his YouTube channel, Robin Uthappa said India wants to avoid a repeat of BGT; Hence, handing over the leadership to Shubman Gill was the right decision. He said:
“It will, in all honesty, be 41 when the World Cup comes around. Right? So, you have to keep that in mind as well. And for all deliberate purposes, I think it’s a matter of making the decision when the risks are low and not when the risks are high, you don’t want another situation like what happened in Australia.”
“It occurs to Rohit Sharma that he is too good a player for something like this to happen to him again. So, maybe to avoid all these things. Maybe, I don’t know… you don’t want an uncomfortable situation like this, and if he stays fit, there won’t be any questions. You know Rohit and Virat will be part of this side.”
They know how to run and how to perform well – Robin Uthappa
Robin Uthappa also backed Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to continue their heroics in 50-over cricket, but warned against slowing down their responses. He said:
“Yes, I think so. I think they have been in good shape as well… So far, they have played very well. So, I think they will continue to do well… They know how to run and how to perform well, and they will stick to their specific mold that suits them, and I think they will continue to do that.
“I don’t see some kind of reduction in that sense, but it’s just about the feedback and the way these things work, how these things work because at the moment, they’re not playing a lot of cricket either. Probably the only cricket they’ll find themselves playing is IPL and One Day cricket, and maybe some domestic One Day matches if they come.”
If he stays fit, I think he will be part of the next World Cup – Robin Uthappa
Predicting Rohit Sharma’s ODI future, Robin Uthappa said that the modern-day batsman can only book a place in India’s ODI squad for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027 if he works hard on his body and maintains his fitness at the highest level. He said:
“If he stays fit, I think he will be part of the next World Cup because, as I said at the start of the group, I think the templates for success in ODI cricket are clear for them. They know what suits them… However, Rohit Sharma is someone who has basically upped the ante even in one-day cricket, and I think in the last 3-4 years, he has played much faster, and I think that has been a bit of a turnaround from him.”
“Ideally, how he scored all his runs in ODI cricket his first fifty would have been around 60-75 balls, then the next fifty to much less, then the next fifty to much less… The shift in which he approaches one-day cricket has changed, and I think he may have found a sweet spot in that,” he added.
