‘Dear idli chutney no sambhar’: Bizarre GATE admit card email greeting made Redditors laugh, responds IIT Roorkee

A Reddit user’s post about a strange email from the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) administration sparked a flurry of laughter and memes across social media. The user, who goes by the name @No_Yogurt8713, shared a screenshot of the email, which included an unusual greeting: “Dear idli chutney no sambhar.”

The email, which informed candidates that their GATE 2025 admit cards are available for download, left many users confused. In the post, the user expressed his confusion, asking: “Is this intentional?” How could they make such a mistake? ”

In response to the post, several users shared screenshots of similar emails they received with the same greeting that highlight the scale of the issue.

The strange greeting quickly caught the attention of social media users, leading to a wave of humorous comments. “That’s right, I received the same thing. Somebody must have done something rotten,” one user said, while another quipped: “Is this a joke?”

The mix-up sparked a frenzy, as users creatively pored over the email’s strange wording. One user commented humorously: “Hey. Idli no sambhar chutney, from Sarson da saag and makki di roti,” while another added: “I hope it’s orange chutney; otherwise it would be a waste of time to be stuck with white chutney and no sambhar.”

Another user jokingly asked the person to check if his name on the admit card is correct, “Bro, admit download kar card or check kar k sambhar to nahi daala unhone.”

Some people believe that a recent email was sent in error, and one user speculated that it was due to a SQL injection attack on the GATE database. Others asked for the sender’s full email address to confirm its authenticity. Despite the confusion, the email entertained many and went viral.

In response to the uproar, IIT Roorkee, the organizing body for GATE 2025, issued a statement explaining that the error was caused by a “technical glitch”. “The issue was resolved immediately and emails with the correct names were sent to these candidates. We are sorry for the inconvenience caused,” said Sonika Srivastava, media cell officer, IIT Roorkee.

GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) is a national test that evaluates students’ knowledge in various subjects. Those who pass the program can continue their studies with master’s and doctoral programs or find jobs in public sector companies. The GATE 2025 exam will be held by IIT Roorkee on February 1, 2, 15 and 16 as a computer-based test in eight test zones.
