Three people died and many others were injured after the shooter opened the fire from a boat in a crowded bar at the waterfront in Soutbort, North Carolina.
The attack took place on Saturday evening outside the American Fish Company in the Southport Peach Basin.
City spokesman Chian Kitches said the boat pulled the sidewalk around 21:30 local time (01:30 GMT) before the striker opened the fire. Then the attacker fled on a boat towards the inner waterway.
The officials said that the suspect, who matches the description, was arrested half an hour later by the American Coast Guard on the near island of Ok, about 12 miles (19 km) west of the accident.
The suspect was not released by the police.
Soutbort Police chief Todd Coring described the incident as a “very tragic night” of society.
The city is home to less than 4000 people. “We are a small community, one of the societies that everyone knows,” said Coring president.
He may have been injured by six people, who are now treated in the hospital. The deceased was not identified by the police.
The incident prompted Soutbort’s officials to issue a statement urging people to stay in their homes while the active fire investigation was continuing.
“I am comfortable with saying that we do not feel that there are any additional threats to society,” said Coring president.
