The workers in the Post began a strike at the country after the federal government authorized widespread reforms that would close some post offices and end certain types of delivery operations.
The Canadian Federation of Postal Workers (CUPW) described the proposed reforms as “an attack on our postal service and workers” as announced by work.
The strike by the members of the Federation comes 55,000 amid a continuous dispute over wages and benefits for the postal workers that led to a period of weekly withdrawal in late last year.
Canada Post said that the operations will be closed during the strike, leaving the unarmed mail and parcels to millions and adding them that would double the delicious financial problems in the company.
The comprehensive changes announced by the federal government follow years of financial losses enjoyed by the postal service, which faces low demand and intense competition from special parcel delivery services.
Procurement Minister Joel Light Pound said on Thursday that Canada Post lost one billion Canadian dollars ($ 717; 535 million pounds) last year, and it is on the right path to a loss of $ 1.5 billion this year.
“Canada Post is actually affected, and repeated rescue operations are not a long -term solution,” he said in a statement.
The proposed changes will witness the closure of many post offices in the areas that were once rural days and the service gives more flexibility to raise prices. The service can also reduce the types of parcels that are delivered by air and more dependence on land transport to save costs.
One of the important suggestions will be to end home delivery operations, which will witness the delivery of parcels to community mail boxes instead of people’s doors.
An estimated four million titles are still receiving this service in the country.
“The goal, in the end, is to save Canada’s post,” said Lightbound to reporters.
The Percen Workers Union said that the proposals “will undermine public service only” and do not meet the needs of customers.
“I was disappointed that the union chose to escalate the strike activity, which would lead to an increase in the deterioration of the financial situation in Canada Post.”
“The national strike of any length will affect the service of Canadians and companies after the end of the strike activity,” he added.
In a statement on Friday, the Canadian Association of Independent Business warned of the impact of job work on small companies in the country “huge”.
“Doing this in the period before the charging season for sale is anxious is concerned,” he said.
Government social security verification will continue during the strike.
Last year, workers began a week -long strike and improving working conditions.
Negotiations on wage conflict remain without a solution.
